Sheriff James Stuart is the 17th Sheriff of Anoka County since the office was established in 1857.
James has demonstrated a commitment to providing the best possible services to the citizens and communities that he proudly serves and actively participates in numerous collaborative and outreach efforts.
Sheriff Stuart is active with the Minnesota Sheriff's Association on the Executive Committee, currently serves as the President, and represents law enforcement on the MSA Legislative and Training Committees. He has also active on the national level with the National Sheriff's Association as a former Executive Committee member, a member of the Board of Directors, and a committee member for the Domestic Violence and Crime Services, Youth Programs and Juvenile Justice, and Global Policing Affairs Committees.
Sheriff Stuart also serves locally as a Board member for Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge, Play to Your Strengths, and The Front Line Foundation.
He is also a member of the following organizations:
• Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
• the National Domestic Preparedness Coalition
• the Executive Committee for the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force
• An Executive Committee member of Minnesota HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Committee
• the Secretary/Treasurer for the Joint Law Enforcement Council
• Chair of the JLEC Central Communications Committee
James is a Marine, and a graduate of St. Mary's University and the 102nd session of the National Sheriff's Institute and studied Public Safety Leadership at the University of MN, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. He is committed to the development of our youth, community partnerships and service that exceeds expectations. He was nominated for "National Sheriff of the Year" and was awarded the Medal of Merit by the National Sheriff's Association in 2015, 2016 and 2019 for his contributions to the community and to the field of criminal justice.
Sheriff Stuart is a national leader, speaker and presenter that has received many honors and recognitions. However, his response remains consistent; that it is the entire team at the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office that deserves the recognition and support for the outstanding work that they do every single day.
